ST. JANīS FARM

St. Janīs farm is situated in the village of Kunvald, in the picturesque countryside at the southern foot of the gently rising Eagle Mountains. The village area is quite hilli and its elevation above sea level stretches from 420m to 620m. The farm itself lies on an elevated piece of land just above the Zamberk - Kunvald - Rokytnice v Orlických horách road and when passing through Kunvald you cannot disregard it.

Looking back, you can trace the history of the farm as far as to the beginning of the 15th century. It is believed to be the place from which the noble family of Vrazdove of Kunvald had originated and it is also likely to be the birthplace of Matej of Kunvald, the first bishop of the evangelical church of Jednota bratrska. Our family have been owning the farm since 1713 when it was purchased by our wealthy ancestor named Martin Lyer who had the statue of St. Jan Nepomucký brought in here from Prague. He did it as an axpression of gratitude because ance, being held in a Jewish captivity, he prayed to Jan Nepomucky and he succeeded to escape to a miracle. There were a lot of outstanding poeple among our ancestors. One who was awarded the greatest honour was the canon and general vicar of Hradec Kralove diocese, SS.Th.Dr.Jan Sebestian Lyer "Nobilis de Lauro", who was granted nobility. The farm also served as a place of residence of the authorities of the county of Zamberk.

Our family recieved the farm back as a result of restitution in 1992 but the estate had been in a very bad condition at that time. In 1994, we began reconstruction work. At present, we manage 90 ha of land and concentrate on both plant and animal production. In addition, since 1995 we have been focusing on agroturism.

All the rooms are furnished in a stylish manner and the beds are fitted with medicinal mattresses. There is a restaurant approximately 800 m from the farm where you can have lunch, dinner and supper.

There are a lot of natural beauties in our area. There is a natural reservation park where many rare plants on the marshes can be found as well as a lot of natural phenomena can be seen there. Well worth mentioning is also "The Land Gate". It is actually a gate-like structure created by the river Divoka Orlice when it forced its way through the ridge of the Eagle Mountains. If you happen to have a good luck, you might also be able to find some fossils in nearby clay slate rocks. As the environment gradually improves, once almost extinct of animals are coming back (e.g. partridges, badgers).
